JEE Main 2023 eligibility criteria has been released by NTA. You need to fulfil the eligibility requirements and only then you can fill the application form for JEE Main 2023. The eligibility criteria for admission in NITs, IIITs and other private colleges for B.Tech. in 2023 has been revised to allow students who have cleared their class 12 or equivalent examination in 2021, 2022 or appearing in 2023, to appear in JEE Main 2023.
In 2023, you are expected to appear in the exam (Paper 1) twice i.e. in the months of January and April. Also, Paper 2A and 2B will be held twice only, i.e. in the months of January and April 2023.

Basic JEE Main Eligibility Criteria to appear in 2023
You should be an Indian Citizen i.e. your nationality should be Indian. People of foreign origin such as NRIs, PIOs, OCIs & Foreign national candidates are also eligible to apply for JEE Main 2023.
Is Aadhar Card mandatory to meet JEE Main 2023 Eligibility Criteria?
Aadhaar Card is not a mandatory requirement to be eligible for the examination. You can also use your valid Passport number, Bank Account Number, Ration Card number or any other valid Government identification to be eligible for JEE Main.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023: Age Limit
The criteria of age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2023 has been removed. If you have passed class 12th examination in 2021 or 2022 or if you are appearing for class 12th examination in 2023, irrespective of your age, you are eligible to appear for JEE Main 2023. However, you need to meet the eligibility criteria of the age limit of the institutes you are looking forward to take admission to.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023: Year of Qualifying Examination
You can appear for JEE Main 2023 examination if you have passed your class 12th exams or other qualifying exams in 2021 or 2022 or if you will be appearing in 2023.
In simpler words, if you have passed your class 12th exam (or other qualifying examination) in 2020 or before 2020, you would not be eligible for JEE Main 2023. Also, in case you have appeared in 12th or other qualifying examination in 2020 but didn’t pass in 2020 and reappeared in 2021, you would still not be eligible to appear in JEE Main 2023.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023: Subjects in Qualifying Examination
This year, NTA has made certain changes to the eligibility criteria for JEE Mains and for determining eligibility for admission to B.E./B.Tech. / B.Arch. / B.Planning.
For admission to B.E./B.Tech, you should have quailifed your class 12 or equivalent qualifying exam with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of Chemistry / Biotechnology / Biology or Technical vocational subjects.
For admission to B.Arch, passing the qualifying exam with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry is a must.
For admission to B. Planning, you should have passed the qualifying examination with Mathematics.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023: Number of Attempts
You can register for a total of 3 attempts. Registration for JEE Main 2023 (January and April attempts) will be counted as one attempt.
You would only be eligible for registration for JEE Main 2023 and later.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023: Marks in Qualifying examination
There is no minimum qualifying marks criteria to register for JEE Main 2023. However, each institute has its own qualifying criteria to grant admission to the students.
For admissions to IIITs, NITs and CFTIs which participate in JEE Main 2023 through Central Seat Allocation Board, All India Rank in JEE Main would be considered, however, you should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination or equivalent examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards or equivalent examination.
If you are from SC/ST category, you would need to secure at least 65% marks in the 12th class examination.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for Qualifying Examination (QE) in 2023
You will be eligible for JEE Main 2023 if you qualify any one of the exams mentioned below in 2021, 2022 or in the upcoming year 2023:
- Final 10+2 examination by any recognized State or Central board such as CBSE and ICSE.
- Intermediate or Pre-University exam as conducted by a recognized university or board.
- Final exam of the Joint Services Wing (2-year course) by National Defence Academy (NDA).
- S.S.E. examination conducted by National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of 5 subjects.
- Any school, board or university exam in India or in any foreign country which is recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 final exam by Association of Indian Universities
Qualifying Examinations for Admission to IITs
- State board of technical education or All India Council for Technical Education recognised diploma (with a minimum duration of 3 years).
- H.S.C vocational examination.
- General Certificate Education (GCE) exam conducted in London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka, at Advanced (A) level.
- High School Certificate Examination by Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office.
In case your relevant qualifying exam is not a public examination, you should have passed at least one public examination at an earlier level, i.e. at board or pre-university level.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023: Admission to IIITs, NITs and CFTIs through JEE Main 2023 for institutes participating through Central Seat Allocation Board
If you are planning to seek admission to IIITs, NITs and CFTIs that participate in JEE Main 2023 through Central Seat Allocation Board, the admissions will be based on the will be based on All India Rank (AIR). You should have scored at least 75% marks in your 12th examination or should be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th examination (of the respective Boards).
In case, you are from SC/ST category, you need to secure at least 65% in the 12th class and should fulfil the subject combination eligibility criteria to take admission into B.E./B.Tech. & B. Arch./B. Planning courses.
B.E/B.Tech. admissions to IIITs, NITs and CFTIs – Eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2023: You should have passed your 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the subjects i.e. Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or Technical Vocational subjects.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023: Admission to other Institutions
NTA has suggested technical institutes which are participating in counselling for JEE Main 2023 through JoSAA/CSAB to adopt the eligibility criteria of IIITs, NITs and CFTIs. In case any state chooses to provide admission to state universities affiliated engineering colleges, the state will need to prepare a separate rank list based on criteria finalised by the state university.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2023 (Applicable State Codes)
The State Code of JEE Main 2023 implies the code of the State where you have passed your 10+2 or equivalent examination. You must include the state code of the state which will make you eligible to appear in the JEE Main 2023 examination.
If you have appeared for your 12th exam or other qualifying exams from a particular state but was unable to clear the exam and have re-appeared for improvement from a different state, then your state code for eligibility for JEE Main would be the one where you had originally appeared for your 12th examination. Here, your state code for JEE Main 2023 will not be from the state where you have appeared for the improvement examination.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for Droppers and Repeaters in 2023
Droppers in JEE Main: If you have dropped a year after your 10+2 examination or other qualifying examination to focus on JEE Main 2023, then you will be termed as a Dropper.
Repeaters in JEE Main: If you appeared for JEE Main in any previous year after clearing your 10+2 examination or other qualifying examination but did not manage to crack JEE Main and will be appearing for JEE Main in 2023, then you will be termed as a repeater.
The JEE Main eligibility criteria for droppers and repeaters is as below:
- You have no age limit to appear for JEE Main.
- You should have appeared for your 10+2 exam or any qualifying exam in 2021 or 2022, or should be appearing for 10+2 examination in upcoming year 2023.
- To be eligible for admissions to IIITs, NITs and CFTIs, you should have scored at least 75% in your 12th exam or should be in the top 20 percentile of your respective board examination. If you belong to the SC/ST category, you should have scored 65% in your 12th examination.
- You should have opted for at least 5 subjects in the 12th standard qualifying examination. However, you need to fulfil the subject criteria for the institutes where you wish to take admission to.
