There are only a few national level engineering entrance exams in India for admission to the B. Tech. courses at top engineering colleges. These B. Tech. entrance exams are very competitive as lakhs of brightest students appear for these exams each year. Some of the most sought-after engineering entrance exams in India are as below:

JEE Main (Joint Entrance Exam – Main)

JEE Main is the topmost national level, all India engineering examination, previously known as AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination). JEE Main is an online entrance exam conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency). The JEE Main exam is held twice each year (January and April of every year). If you plan to seek admission into any of the NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, you need to appear for the JEE Main engineering entrance exam. If you are planning to get into any of the IITs, you need to first qualify in JEE Main and then write the JEE Advanced entrance exam.

You can also get admission to B. Tech. / B.E. programs of some of the state-affiliated and private colleges based on your score in JEE Main.

JEE Advanced (Joint Entrance Exam – Advanced)

JEE Advanced is the engineering entrance examination for admission to IITs, the most prestigious Institutions of Excellence.  JEE Advanced is an online engineering entrance exam conducted by one of the IITs. This engineering exam was earlier known as IIT JEE.  Having qualified in JEE Main, based on your ranking, you become eligible to write JEE Advanced. Based on your ranking, you get qualified to get admission to one of the IITs.

If you are one of the top 2.45 lakh students, who qualify JEE Main, you are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced (IIT JEE) engineering exam. You need to secure a top rank in JEE Advanced engineering entrance, competing against 2.45 lakh students, to be able to get into an IIT.

National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA)

NATA is a national-level engineering entrance exam and is held once every year. Students can get admission into B. Arch Courses at top architectural colleges after clearing this exam. Council of Architecture conducts this engineering exam.

If you wish to become an Architect, you need to appear for engineering entrance test for Architecture, i.e. NATA. After qualifying NATA, you can get admission in B. Arch. courses in some of the top colleges like School of Planning and Architecture – Delhi, Sir J. J. College of Architecture – Mumbai, and Department of Architecture – IIT Roorkee, amongst others.

BITS conducts BITSAT for admission to their B.E. courses at the three Birla Institute campuses across India. About 3 lakh students write BITSAT - an online entrance exam for engineering. This engineering entrance exam is conducted only for admission to Goa, Hyderabad and Pilani campuses of Birla University.

Sikkim Manipal University has its own engineering admission test known as the SMIT exam. This engineering entrance is for admission to B.Tech courses at the Sikkim campus of the university. While the university has its own entrance exam for engineering, i.e. the SMIT (held in offline mode), it also considers the JEE score for taking admission to the B. Tech. courses at the university.


Vellore Institute of Technology holds VITEEE. This engineering exam is conducted at the national level for admission to B. Tech courses at the Vellore and Chennai campuses of the university. Students appearing in VITEE – entrance exam, are also eligible for admission into the colleges in Bhopal and Amravati.


SET – Engineering is a university level engineering entrance test for admission to B. Tech. courses at Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune.  Students who wish to seek admission to Symbiosis can also apply using their JEE Main or MHT-CET score.


Amity University conducts its own JEE examination known as Amity JEE for admissions to its B.Tech. programs. This engineering entrance exam is held in 64 cities across India for admission to the undergraduate engineering courses at the ten campuses of the Amity University.


SRMJEE is a Joint Entrance Examination for admission to SRM Institute of Science and Technology for B. Tech. courses. SRM offers B. Tech. courses at it’s Ghaziabad, Amravati and Haryana campuses.

SRM JEEE is an online engineering entrance exam. This exam is specifically for students who wish to apply for admission to SRM University campuses across India.
